Overview of the Disaster and its Effects on Tourism and Hospitality Sector
Tourism and hospitality industry in Australia is one of the major markets globally. However the recent news report from ABC news Australia, Bushfires and Corona virus the twin disaster has hit the country in a very pathetic way (ABC News, 2020). Due to the fires many people are opting not to make a visit at this place. From the outbreak of fire last year the cancellations are taking place in a rapid pace as that has created a fear among the people that they could however may get affected. The country was recovering from the epidemic created by bushfire; corona virus has made an arrival that has further created a massive downfall.
The epicentre of the virus is in China and the number of people that visit Australia every year is 9.3 million, out of which 1.4 million make a visit from China. Local transporters are saying that they have never seen such a downfall in last 45 years (The Guardian, 2020). Due to this downfall the Australian economy is going to suffer billions of dollars worth damage if the Australian government continues to keep the ban for next six months. There is certainly a very thin hope of the inflow of tourists in recent times and even after the epidemic is taken care of, the possibility of returning back to the same pace and recovering the losses is a long term task for Australia. Majority of flights has been cancelled and the bookings that were made for the hotels beforehand are also getting cancelled. Many small scale industries that are connected with the tourism industry are badly affected as their income is seeing a severe downfall (Cro, S & Martins, 2017).
The disaster has disrupted the community life in as serious way possible and that causes death and many injuries to the particular region where bushfire has taken pace and also due to corona virus. This has created a serious impact on tourism and hospitality industry as the flights or any transportation depending on the severity of the damage is cancelled in and out of that region. The infrastructural damage could cause serious damage to the hotels and restaurants and they may be closed for a certain period of time thus creating a disruption for the customer inflow. Hence, it can be ascertained that the disaster has a serious effects on the tourism and hospitality industry (Jiang & Ritchie, 2017).
Legal and Regulatory Issues Affecting Impacts of Disaster
The industry must be prepared to handle the situation of disaster as that could occur at any moment. Therefore there are some polices formed that cover the legal aspect and will form a set of rules, regulations, guidelines, directives that could give a framework for long term tourism development (Cro and Martins, 2017). There are two frameworks, one is legal and other is regulatory framework. The legal framework is a broader system, which consists of rules, which governs the decision-making. As the industry is expanding and it has a large contribution, economically all around the world therefore a legal aspect must be there to monitor properly the function of the industry (Weekes & Bello, 2019).
There are many laws that need to be followed, as the sustainability has to be kept in mind. The environment protection law, health and safety of the individual person as well as of the company, contact law and many more are there, which constitute to the tourism laws. The prime factor that needs to be considered is looking for the...
