Energy Resources: Types, Pros, Cons and Applications
Energy might be defined as; “the ability to do work”, and there could be found several
sources of energy which follow “First Law of Thermodynamics” (also known as; “Law of
conservation of energy”). According to this law, total energy of the universe remains conserved
or energy can’t be created or destroyed. Thus; energy can only be transformed from one form to
another form. Here the significance of renewable energy resources can be understood means;
those energy sources which can be replenished in a quick manner. On the other hand, energy
resources which take great time in replenishment are known as; non-renewable ones (Alcamo et
al., 2005).
For instance; fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) might be called non-renewable energy
resources owing to their long generation period while, resources based on sun, wind, water, bio-
mass, and nuclear power may be called renewable ones. All of above defined energy resources
comprise their own advantages as well as disadvantages which can be described as follows:
1. Fossil- fuels
These are chiefly produced because of decomposition of dead creatures through long-
term natural reactions. Though, these energy resources are quite efficient, reliable, and cheap as
well, but because of their non-renewable, unsustainable and destructive nature, these are usually
criticized by environmentalists (Giampietro et al., 1997).
2. Solar- energy
Energy of sun- rays can be entrapped by specific devices like; solar- cell as well as solar-
