Your friend who is serving in the same clinical setting with you stops you in the hallway to ask you what he should do. His wife has called, crying, saying she feels really sick and would like him to come home right away. He has already missed several days because his uncle died and he also had a bout of the flu. The supervisor spoke with your friend this morning about how they would have to try to make up for some of the absences by providing special opportunities for him to cover areas he has missed. In fact, she told him that she has arranged for him to assist in an evaluation that starts at noon and will take about 4 hours, but from which he will benefit tremendously. He cannot get home and back in time for the beginning of the procedure. How should you respond? Why? What do you think he should do? Why?
