Methods to calculate the prevalence of obesity
Methods to calculate the prevalence of obesity
Introduction:
According to the World Health Organization (2020), obesity is considered as the accumulation of excessive fat in the body that re
sults in the energy imbalance in individuals and exposes to greater heath risks. It is a multifactorial disease, that is positioned as the fifth leading cause for morbidity as well as mortality. There is an approximate 10% increase in the prevalence of obesity in people around the world in the last 20 years (Smith and Smith, 2016; Blüher, 2019). Biologically, obesity is defined as the deposition of triglycerides in adipose tissues which expand in size when there is excessive amount of unutilized energy present in the body. The main causes of the obesity are listed as follows (Smith and Smith, 2016; Chooi et al., 2018):
a) Genetics
b) Physical inactivity
c) Energy rich and low-nutrient diet
d) Imbalance of the gut microbiome
e) Socioeconomic factors
f) Medications
Even though the cause of obesity in people is high due to the genetic factors which is visualized by the rate of metabolism in the body, physical inactivity due to sedentary lifestyle is the second leading cause that leads to the fat deposition. Globalization has allowed the people to buy food and other goods in cheaper rates, which always comes with a compromised side effect of being low in nutrient composition with higher energy giving components (carbohydrates and fats) (Blüher, 2019). Obesity occurs in the body, when the body receives higher energy intake majorly from diet than the energy expenditure (Smith and Smith, 2016; Chooi et al., 2018; Emmons et al., 2018).
Obesity affects the people irrespective of age, demographics, socioeconomic status, and gender. However, women are prone to obesity compared to men and this trend has remained constant for more than 50 years. It is estimated that around one third of the world population is obese and they are suffering from diseases such as listed (Smith and Smith, 2016; Chooi et al., 2018):
a) Hypertension
b) Diabetes mellitus
c) Musculoskeletal diseases
d) Osteoarthritis
e) Stroke
f) Cancer
g) Mental disability
Methods:
Various authors, including Chooi et al. (2018), measured the prevalence of obesity in the worldwide population by calculating the body mass index (BMI) in different individual from the publicly available databases....
