1. Diagnosis for Joan
The case study states that Joan suffers from a consortium of disorders. As observed by Hansen et al. from the symptoms shown by Joan, it could be inferred that she was possibly suffering from a heart disease. The symptoms are a probable indication of an onset of an initial phase of congestive heart failure.
2. Causes for Joan’s Shortness of Breath
Congestive heart failure is a condition that affects the functioning of the heart. The normal functioning of the heart to pump blood gets impaired. This condition maybe chronic or start suddenly as in the case of Joan, which is referred to as the acute form of Heart Failure. As noted by Parmley et al. the condition presents itself with a consortium of factors ranging from shortness of breath, increased fatigue, nausea, relative decrease in appetite, irregularities in heartbeat, swelling of the extremities, coughing, wheezing, incapability to exercise, lack of alertness as well as decreased ability to concentrate. Due to the large number of symptoms, the disorder is relatively complex.
According to Marantz et al., the shortness of breath or Dyspnea is a pronounced symptom of the disorder. Congestive Heart Failure impedes the heart from its normal functionalities of pumping blood. In this disease, the muscles of the heart are weakened and that may cause the backflow of blood into the lung. In such cases, the condition could lead to the accumulation of fluid in the lungs. This accumulation of fluid may in turn hamper the oxygen from getting into the blood. This may cause the blood from the lungs to be deficient in oxygen and lead to resultant shortness in breath or breathlessness.
3. Suitability of Echocardiogram for Joan and Possible Information to be gained from it
An Echocardiogram (ECG) refers to a method of examination of the heart that makes use of ultrasound waves to obtain a detailed image of the organs. As observed by Siouta et al., the basic purpose of conducting an ECG would be to detect any...
