You work for an interior design firm. The company has an agreement with several up-and-coming artists in the area to buy their paintings and resell them to clients. The difference between the purchase price and the resale price is split between the artist and the company. You have noticed recently that a designer is telling the artists that he is purchasing a painting for his personal collection, so that the artists do not expect an additional payment for its resale. The designer then sells the painting to a client, and the company keeps the entire profit. The designer says his practice is good for the company (it receives a higher profit) and good for the artists (their work is being sold). Do you regard the designer’s behavior as ethical?
