You will write an essay focusing on one specific health system challenge or debate. Students
are expected to choose one prominent health systems issue and write a short academic essay of
1500 words.
Your essay should:
a) describe the health system challenge you have chosen
b) critically outline the various sides/perspectives of the issue based on the available
literature
c) provide your evidence-based conclusion on the debate or issue.
Suggested topics include (but please feel free to choose your own based on your readings and
experience). You may choose to focus on the issue globally or in a specific country or region:
• Migration of skilled health workers from developing countries to developed countries
• Health system investments should focus on outreach services rather than hospitals
• Private sector and religious organisations are better placed than governments to provide
health services
• How to improve research and development into medicines for neglected diseases
• Universal health coverage should be financed through taxes rather than insurance
The essay must use a variety of sources including journal articles, reports, and WHO documents.
The papers should be essay style and you must provide evidence for your assertions. Look
through the readings for the entire unit for pointers towards key publications that may guide your
thinking. Word count must be included on the cover page. Papers are due by 11:55pm on
Monday 18 September 2017 to be submitted electronically
