You will need to fully respond to the question in 4-5 double-spaced pages (about 1000-1250 words). As an essay, the paper will need to have a central claim (a thesis which concludes the introductory paragraph), topic sentences at the beginning of each paragraph, quotations from our in-class reading(s) that provide textual support (evidence) for your claim, and a conclusionReview Ernest Hemingway’s “Iceberg Theory of Fiction” (covered Week 3 in the “Symbolism/Metaphor” PowerPoint; feel free to review first). In the first full paragraph after the introduction, give me a brief explanation of the theory in your own words: how does it work, what are its merits, and what are its weaknesses? Next, choose a story that is not “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” and write an argument about how the “Iceberg Theory of Fiction” helps us better understand the story. How, in other words, do the concepts of omission and what’s unsaid take on significance in the story you choose?
