You will be analyzing a popular news story using the three sociological theories, structural functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism.
1.Topic Selection: Pick a 'major' news story that has been in the news within the last six months from a major media outlet (print, online, or television).2.Data Collection: Find at least two articles about this event. It is important to select articles that provide different perspectives - choose one article from a standard national news outlet: theNew York Times,The Washington Post,NPR(National Public Radio) or theHuffington Post. Choose another article about the same topic from an international media outlet, such as Great Britain'sBBC News,Arab News,Canadian News. Other sources of international news outlets can be found atOhio University Global Affairs and International Studies3.Citing Sources: Create a bibliographic or “reference” entry for the source, using ASA formatting (see examples in theASA Guide).4.Theoretical Analysis: For each theory, provide a brief overview of the main premise of the theory and then explain how that premise is reflected in the reporting of the news story.Make sure you include an in-text citation and reference citation for the source from which you got your information about the theories (for example, if you learned about them from the book, cite the book).
