According to the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, number of visitors to the Myrtle
Beach Area increased by c. 2.2% y-o-y to 14.0m in 2010. This includes both the overnight
visitors and day-trippers. More than 64% of the population visiting Myrtle Beach Area were
families (average family comprises of 3 adults and 2 children), while couples accounted for c.
29% of the total visiting population. Given the scenic beauty and the developed
infrastructure, majority of the people visiting Myrtle Beach tend to spend more than 4 nights
in the region.
Number of visitors to Myrtle Beach picks up significantly in June, and remains in the higher
terrain till August, where after it again falls steadily. As a result majority of the hotel rooms
remain occupied during this period. Occupancy rates in July 2010 reached all time high of
87.1%, while the average occupancy rate for 2010 (50.1%) remained comparable to 2008
levels (50.3%). This resulted in higher ADR or average daily room rate. Besides the rising
demand for hotel rooms, room-supply also increased phenomenally during 2010. During this
period the number of available rooms increased from 89,000 in 2009 to 98,573 in 2010,
growing ~11% y-o-y. This clearly shows that though the supply increased in 2010, the
demand also increased at a steady rate, thus signalling that the Myrtle Beach had significant
amount of unmet demand for quality rooms.
In addition to the scenic beauty of the Myrtle Beach, many visitors are also attracted by the
number of restaurants in the area. According to the latest stats from funbeaches, there are
approximately 1,650 full service restaurants in the Myrtle Beach area catering to the 14.0m
visitors to the Myrtle Beach Area. These restaurants can be classified as: American, Bakery,
Bar & Grill, Breakfast, Chinese, Delivery/Take Out, European, Fondue, German, Ice
cream/Desserts, International, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Jewish, Mediterranean, Mexican,
Other, Pizza, Seafood, Steak House, Thai, and Theme restaurants.
