You have just interviewed for two nursing positions and are trying to decide which job to pursue. During your first interview for a team member position, the nurse manger, Mr. Caruso, was cheerful, spoke highly of his current staff and complimented them for their ability to set goals and participate in decision making, listened to your ideas, and explored ways in which you could contribute to this team’s effectiveness. The second nurse manager, Mrs. Turner, was also cheerful and talkative. She provided you with a job description as a primary nurse caregiver, explained her expectations of you as new employee, and spoke of new programs she was attempting to implement. Both nurse managers talked about changes taking place in their facilities and the need for employees to remain flexible.

Guide Questions:

  1. Both nurse mangers spoke changes that were taking place in their facility. As a nurse, how can you assist your peers who are unhappy and seem to resist change even when it is positive?

  2. Think about managers (or leaders) you have known and admired. What characteristics did they have that you would like to integrate into your own management style should you become a nurse manager?
