Introduction
Leadership in the words of Warren Bennis – a leadership expert, is the capacity to convert vision into actual reality. It is the ability to ‘guide’ and ‘lead’ others to set and achieve challenging goals, take swift and collaborative decisions, inspire and motivate others to o
utperform the competition. Effective Leadership includes traits such as strong character, integrity, ethics, emotional intelligence among others. This report purpose is to understand and develop trait of a leader. First, it analyzes the successful real-life leader and their traits. Then, it demonstrates the leadership development plan, which is a gradual method to develop leadership. Finally, there is a feedback on the plan from another real-life leader. The ultimate goal is to understand leadership principles and use practical tool of leadership development plan to develop and nurture leadership.
1. Observation of Leader
Oprah Winfrey is my favorite leader because of her superior leadership. She passed through many difficult times throughout her life positively. As other leaders have done today. She was also an exciting life. That's why I choose it up for a 20th century commander. Oprah is clearly a superior leader because she has gone through difficult times and has never given up. She was abuse from her relatives sexually, but Oprah still didn’t give up and to me that’s what I think makes her a great leader. Instead she moved and was excelled in school even she had a tragic life. She made scholarships and great grades to the Tennessee University. She is a very intelligent person with a caring heart. Any leader should be Clever. Oprah is a caring person, but she can keep her leadership qualities even whereas she cares. Also, during sexually abused she turned her negative energy to the positive energy by excelling in school. Oprah, she achieved a lot of goals in her life all of her achievement has influence to the people. She lost a lot of weight around 90 pounds when started first time her TV program. Also, she has had a lot of respect from many people from all of the great things she has done. She became a charisma person by her TV show and she gets a lot of followers. She helped many of people and she change their life from that she shows the people how the good behavior can make all the people respect each other and help each other can make other happy (Burkins et al. 2016).
Transformational Leadership
Transformational approach changes, inspires and transforms people and the concerned organization. They have the capability to inspire others through their communication style, intelligence and in effect provide personal attention to others and their followers. They promote a common vision and questions the status quo, in order to stimulate constructive changes. As a transformational leader, Oprah Winfrey had a clear vison and inspired and transformed lives of millions worldwide through her multi award winning show ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’. People readily identify with her and she could easily motivate others through her excellent communication style (Amanchukwu et al. 2015).
Transactional Leadership
In the Transactional leadership, leaders promote compliance through rewards and punishments among followers. As mentioned by (Day 2014), this form of leadership style works mostly inside structure organizational culture, where the leader and the team are defined as per the set rules of an organization. Some experts argue that both transformational and transactional styles are mutually exclusive, as transformational style emerge from intrinsic nature, character and personality of the leader, while transactional is bestowed on the leader largely because of organizational rules and extrinsic motivation of followers for rewards and save from punishment. Oprah Winfrey do not qualify under the transactional-style of leadership. She is a self-made woman, who succeeded, despite from being a poor background in a largely male-dominated world. She excelled at media and made a brand of herself and gradually branched out to magazines, movies, TV shows and radio. She dreamt big not just for herself but for the community and communicated the same through her celebrated show (Bolden 2016).
Emotional Intelligence
Emotional Intelligence or EI, as defined by American psychologist, Daniel Goleman, consists of four key elements, Self-Awareness, Social Awareness, Self-Management and Management of Relationships. As stated by Sherry 2018, in present context, it has proven to be more valuable than Intelligence Quotient or IQ. It is the ability to comprehend and control feelings, emotions of oneself and others. It is associated with motivation, empathy, relationship, compassion and feelings such as anxiety, depression, grief, joy among others. It affects the decision-making and there lies the importance of EI. Oprah has a high emotional intelligence, which she showcased through her compassionate communication style and her ability to uplift the morale and motivation of people around her. EI leaders are confident, intuitive, straight-forward, good communicators, approachable, direct, consistent, inspiring, focused and driven to their goals. ‘The Oprah Shows’ showcased all the above traits in her personality (Atkinson et al. 2016).
Charismatic Leadership
Charismatic leaders exert great influence and power on their followers through their natural ‘Charm’. This style comes natural to the personality of the leader and is unlike formal authority and traditional transactional leadership style. As noted by Storey 2016, Charismatic leaders enjoy great support and affection from their followers. Some of the prominent examples include, Steve Jobs, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela among others. Oprah Winfrey’s dominance in her field is evident from the fact that she was the first woman to own broadcast network. She is lauded for her self-improvement, positivity and charitable works. Her social conscience was visible in her shows, where she motivated millions. Such traits gave her respect and she succeeded in winning support from her followers and the community at large.
Oprah’s grand rhetoric and inspirational speeches attracted huge media and people attention. She revolutionized changes by invoking personal and emotional appeals to other people on her shows. All her life she is using her charisma to command respect and influence people (Iqbal et al. 2015).
Confidence
Self-confidence means self-assurance about one’s abilities and skills. Confidence is necessary to commit to decisions and goals. It includes a sense of self-assurance, self-belief and self-esteem to take tough decisions, risks and accomplish goals. Oprah Winfrey has a truckload of confidence into her, which was built largely from her life’s experiential learnings. Oprah believes that it is the confidence in our attitude and behavior that allows us to keep looking for new directions, adventures and make us learn and grow in our lives. Oprah emerged from the ashes, when she was sexually exploited at young age to lead and own the media channel, largely because she had self-belief in her abilities and she relied on them and emerged winner (Ehrhart 2015).
2. Leadership Diagnostic Tool
Self-Confident Test
Self-confidence is the belief in one’s own abilities and ambitions. It is largely the product of nature and nurture, that means, both environment and hereditary factors influence the level of confidence. It can be enhanced by accomplishing major tasks in one’s life. High confidence is needed to achieve ambitious goals in the life. There are various diagnostic tools to measure the same, so that one can acknowledge one’s self-confidence and then suitably use that metric to further improve themselves on that trait (Marcia 2017).
On the Du Brin’ diagnostic measurement tool for Self-Confidence, the total score after answering 15 questions is 52, which lies in the moderate range on the self-confidence scale. I do realize the importance of self-confidence and have set significant life goals for myself. I do not hesitate to take up leadership assignments and have also performed well in most of the tasks in the history. I do shake hands confidently and, on many occasions, people have encouraged me for confident attitude. However, I become tense in presenting myself in the social situations and do not prefer attending any social events only by myself. Sometimes, I tend to change my decisions easily based on the opinion of others. I do realize that systematic leadership development will build necessary confidence in myself.
Team Leadership Skills
The team leadership skill test measures traits like cultural diversity, virtual team communication and authoritarian vs participatory approach. The total measurement on the scale is 10 out of total score of 15, which indicates suitable participatory approach to leadership and comfortableness working along with culturally-diverse teams.
Authoritarian vs Participatory approach
In the participatory approach, leadership style is more democratic, and the leader seeks the advice from the group. It builds trust among team-members and they are well-informed and related to the decisions, while in...
