Application Assignment 1: Media Critique The theories we discuss in class have applications beyond academic exercises. This assignment is designed to demonstrate that you can apply the information we have learned in a creative way. To write a media critique for this course, you must: 1) Select one or more of the specific theories we talk about in week 3 (i.e., liberal feminist theory, Marxist/socialist feminist theory, radical feminist theory, multiracial/multiethnic feminisms, masculinity theory, queer theory). 2) Choose and view a movie, television show, or television series to critique using your selected theory. The media does not need to explicitly talk about the theory, but you should be able to point to examples of what the selected media gets right and wrong about its characters based on what you learned from the theory. 3) Write a 2 – 5 page paper that critiques your selected movie or show based on what you learned about the theory. This should include: a. An informative title b. An introduction: Tell me the show or movie you are critiquing, the theory you are basing your critique on, and describe the central tenets of the theory you are using. This must include at least one citation in APA format to source material that isn’t my lecture video c. Briefly summarize the plot of the movie or show and introduce any main characters. d. Analyze the show or movie in light of your selected theory. Questions to think about: How are women or people of color or LGBTQ individuals depicted in the show? A conclusion summarizing the arguments made in your paper 4) Submit the document in .doc, .docx, or .pdf format on D2L. 5) The first draft of this assignment is due on Thursday, February 17, at 11:59 pm. Introduction
The Headless Woman (2008
) is a film about Verónica (Vero), an Argentinean bourgeois woman, and how her world spirals out of control when she believes she hit and murdered someone with her automobile. The Marxist/socialist feminist perspective of this film will be explored in this assignment. Vero gets sidetracked by her phone while driving, and when she glances down to respond it, her car collides with something. She examines herself in the rear-view mirror, gathers her thoughts, and drives away. A dog lies motionless on the ground in a non-point-of-view image of Vero racing away from the incident. Even though Vero appears unconcerned about the circumstance, it was apparent that the encounter had caused her great distress.
Plot Summary
Solely on a single aspect, this is the narrative of a middle-aged, middle-class lady who is involved in a vehicle accident, gets a trauma, and subsequently fears she has hit, and possibly killed, a small kid. On yet another level, this is a sociopolitical allegory about the completely vanished, the thousands of labor unions, protesters, and left-wing youngsters who vanished during Argentina's authoritarianism in the 1970s (Ivens, 2021). The movie is organized in such a way that the spectator experiences Vero's (Mara Onetto) uncertainty and dissatisfaction. When her husband realizes she could be to blame for the murder of an indigenous youngster, he hides the proof, keeping her in the darkness. The video makes a connection between women's powerlessness in the home and societal prejudice.
Four young males and their dog run along the motorway in the beginning of the story of this Argentine movie. They are brimming with energizing, lively vitality. Elsewhere, Veronica (Maria Onetto), a rich middle-aged lady who manages a dentistry practice with her brother, departs from a party with a circle of friends and drives down the motorway alone in her automobile. She hears a crash and believes she has ran over something while looking for her phone. Veronica comes to a complete halt in her automobile, immobilized in terror. She believes she sees the corpse of a dog in the rear window, even though she is not convinced. She does not, however, search beneath or around the automobile for a human body. Instead, she kept driving.
At the hospital, Veronica gets X-rayed, and her spouse, Marcos (Cesar Bordon),...
