You are working in private practice, and you are a contract provider for a local Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Dorothy, a department manager for a local retailer, is referred to you for mandatory counseling following an incident at work when her boss smelled alcohol on her breath. Dorothy is quiet and weepy in her presentation, noting her embarrassment at the incident. However, she denies having a drinking problem. Instead of talking about the drinking, she reports that she is too stressed out and hates her boss because he doesn’t understand any of her personal challenges. She tells you that what she really wants to do is leave retail and get a more traditional 9–5 job.

1. How might you work with Dorothy to assist her with her own goals, but also do the job you’ve been contracted to do through the EAP?
