You are working as a consultant, and two companies approach you to put together a plan to move some or all of their computing operations to the cloud. It is up to you to choose which portions of the company assets to move to the cloud, keep the same, or purchase new hardware for. You need to justify each decision to either move to the cloud or not. Also, specify why you picked the cloud provider that you choose, or the hardware vendor that you choose. You can use the example cloud providers in the book, with the tables shown in chapter 14. Or you can obtain current price quotes from Amazon, Google, Rackspace or Microsoft. Please limit your selections to the four cloud providers previously listed, or the fictitious one listed in the book. There are really no right or wrong answers for the choices you make, as long as you justify them with a reason and sufficient data, examples: cost, customer service, reliability, etc. Please provide pricing for cloud-based and on-site hardware-based solutions. You may need to check sites like hp.com and dell.com for recent server models and pricing, or build your own with prices from places such as amazon.com, newegg.com or tigerdirect.com – if you go this route, please provide the parts and prices. Also, include prices for software, such as Microsoft or Linux operating systems, they may be included in the price of the hardware or cloud services, but please specify. The deliverable for this assignment is to turn in two documents, each with roughly 300 (of your own) words (or more, but no novels please) describing how you would proceed with the project. You can include prices as screen-shot images into the document, along with other appropriate screen-shots/tables/pictures, but the images do not count as part of the 300 words. The documents should be named: See below for details of each company: Company A: Company A is a startup custom clothing company, with just under 100 employees. Company A specializes in selling custom print T-Shirts. They require a basic web server that will support no more than 50 simultaneous users, but it should be available 24x7. They also require a database server to run their daily operation, which will store items like customer data, billing/invoicing, T-shirt design items, potential customers (sales leads), etc. The web server should be able to access the DB to pull out customer information, such as previous orders and billing information. The company is very new, and has been taking orders over the phone and storing the information in the DB via a couple of desktop class computers. Their most knowledgeable computer person is an accountant who likes to work on computers in her spare time. Company A is asking for a system that would be more reliable than what they already have, be easy to take care of, and not require them to hire a dedicated IT person. They do not have a very large budget for computers and computing services, but they do realize they need better equipment than desktop-class computers. Company B: Company B is a midsize company with a little over 150 employees. They specialize in selling custom-designed electronics. Company B is asking to redo their systems, which have been in place for a long time and are nearly end of life. Company B has a web server, a database server, an E-mail server and a sharepoint (collaboration) server. They do have a small IT staff, typically three technical people and an IT Manager who is also technical. They know how to design software, build and maintain servers and run an E-mail and sharepoint server. The Web server (> 500 simultaneous users), DB (>50 simultaneous users) and E-mail services are critical to their business, while the sharepoint server is only needed 5X8 (business hours). The web server also communicates with the DB service to pull current customer data. Company B has heard good things about cloud computing, but they also want to maintain their “edge” with their knowledgeable IT staff and maintain the size of their IT staff - neither increasing nor decreasing it. At the end of the day, the most important thing is for the three critical services to remain working day and night.
