Introduction:
This case is about Beaconsfield Mine in Tasmania, Australia. On 25th April 2006 the mines collapsed and around 17 people were in danger of which 14 managed to escape immediately and the rest 3 were trapped in there and 2 were rescued using he remote control device after around a we
ek 1 km below the surface and one died.
Mining of gold was initially founded in the fields of Beacon in the late 1840’s when there a rush of gold hit in the NSW area and that the authority of Tasmania even offered a handsome reward for the discovery of the same as it meant a lot to the government since Gold was a priceless goods. Underground mining started in 1879 with the three shafts naming the hart shaft, the main shaft and Grubb shaft. Soon it was seen that the field of Beacons was growing in the aspect of mining gold and becoming rich with the same. It was seen that soon with the gold mining, as many as 53 or more companies took the initiative towards the same and started working on the mining fields to get more out of it which were mainly a part of the Tasmanian Authority and Officials.
It was observed that an earthquake which took place in the month of April with a greater magnitude of something around 2.2 which made things worse for the Beacon Fields mine where a rock hit the mines and to which the company was blamed because it was believed that the blasting work in the mine had led to the collapse which was also certain from their point. The company who had the contract was popularly known as Beaconsfield Mine Joint Venture and after that incident there was a press statement released which was given a shape of a greater concern for the well being of the three minors who was initially trapped in the whole scenario.
Legitimacy Theory – It implies that the corporations are somewhere bound in the social contract where it is found that they have agreed to perform the variety of desirous actions for the objectives which are planned and they need their prior approval and even other awards where it was ultimately it guarantees the existence of the same.
This theory can also explain the reasons of disclosure of environmental information. The information of the environmental risk with the industrial activities is an asymmetrically distributed.
Types of Legitimacy are –
1. Legal authority – these are the rules that are applied administratively and judicially with known principles. The legal authority has the power to deal with the stuff and sorting things out.
2. Traditional authority - The system that always existed. This is the system which has been followed from early periods and there has been no changes being made to the stuff which is truly correct.
3. Charismatic authority - it is the charisma of the leader, who has the rights to virtue the magical powers.
In reference to the company there are certain rules and laws that a company should follow in order to have a good running and positive business. Here it was the responsibility of the company to have proper training and safety precautions for the workers in the company.
