You are asked to give a job recommendation for your friend Arthur. You have worked closely with Arthur for more than a year on the same health care team and feel qualified to provide such a recommendation. Arthur is an energetic, fun-loving person, and you enjoy his friendship. His manner with patients is sometimes disturbing to you, however. He seems careless at times, almost to the point of negligence. Quite honestly, you would have to recommend him with qualification for the position to which he is applying.

a. Why would you agree or refuse to provide a recommendation?

b. Do you have a responsibility to your colleague to tell him that you are giving him a “qualified” recommendation? Why or why not?

c. Do you have a responsibility to tell the party requesting the recommendation that you and Arthur are friends? Explain your position.
