You are a trainee building services engineer. The architect of a new house range has asked you to assist with some design work associated with simple scientific factors to provide an acceptable internal human comfort level. Describe the basic factors that influence human comfort inside the homes in simple scientific terms. Describe how each of these factors can be measured.  State what would be the acceptable values for each of these factors.

The architect is not convinced of your findings and has asked for proof. Produce clear and accurate answers to the following three calculations relating to human comfort in the internal environment.

1)Calculate the U-value for the following construction:15 mm plasterboard and skim 100 mm lightweight block100 mm cavity filled with mineral wool100 mm brickwork

2) Calculate the illumination in Lux at a desk in an office where there is a requirement for a 4 per cent daylight factor and the external bright sky has been measured at 5000 Lux.

3) Calculate the reverberation time for a village hall which has a volume of 750 m3 and a rear wall of 80 m2 which is covered with sound-absorbing tiles.

Look closely at the factors that affect your human comfort (not just the three which you have explained before). Undertake an analysis of these and discuss how they interact both in quality and quantity.
