You are a therapist working in a sports center where a number of movie stars, producers, and other notables of the film industry work out. Saul has grown quite fond of you and often stays after his workout to chat. But today he is sad and depressed. He tells you of his diagnosis, about which you had not known, and asks you “as a member of the medical world” if you think there is any hope for him or whether he should just give up now. How will you respond to this man who is reaching out to you in your role as a health professional but who is not your patient per se? How will you help him balance hope and a realistic approach to what you know he may be facing? What, if anything will you say to other people with whom you work that may help him through this initial phase of reckoning with his diagnosis?
