Written Assignment: Poster presentation Weight: 40%
Length: 1000 words
Task:

Choose a topic of interest related to acute care or the area of your placement, and design an educational poster on this topic. The audience for this task will
be Registered Nurse(s) and the poster should be aimed at their level of education needs. Your presentation should be based on recent literature and research. With the poster, you will need to submit an abstract which briefly explains the issue covered by the poster and contains the underlying evidence-based practice.

There are two (2) parts of this assignment, both parts need to be submitted to pass this assignment:
1) Develop and submit the educational poster. (~500 words inclusive of
images) CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD A POSTER TEMPLATE

The poster should be an educational tool which uses a variety of mediums to inform the RN about the topic of choice
2) Develop and submit the poster abstract. (~500 words) CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD AN ABSTRACT TEMPLATE

The abstract should introduce the topic, justify why it is important for the acute care RN to understand the topic and conclude with the major elements the RN should take from the poster

Topics

You can choose any topic that interests you and is related to the acute care setting. Some topic choices may include:

  • Specific arrhythmias such as Atrial Fibrillation, Second Degree Blocks, Complete Heart Block

  • Laryngospasm in Recovery

  • Arterial lines and management

  • Arterial Blood Gases

  • DKA

  • Pain management in Acute Care.

  • Neurological considerations with Invasive ventilation

  • Inpatient Sleep deprivation

  • Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation

  • Meningitis

  • Blunt trauma to the head

  • Care of paediatric patients in critical care settings

  • Cardiogenic shock

  • Sepsis (be specific such as the pathophysiology of sepsis, urosepsis,

    pharmacotherapy in sepsis)

  • Post op ileus

  • Pulmonary emboli

  • Fat emboli

  • Medication-induced anaphylaxis

  • A case study of a deteriorating patient on the ward

    Your poster should be of value and interest to a Registered Nurse audience so discuss the topic with your supervisor and other staff. Ask for recent cases which the staff would like to know more about or discuss with the educator areas of need.

    Note: we need to see more than an outline of a policy and you must use the most current evidence. You will need to think what do RN's have as knowledge on the topic already? How can I broaden their knowledge? For example, pathophysiology and pharmacodynamics will add depth to your presentation and you must demonstrate to us that you have a depth of understanding on the topic. As the word count is quite short it is recommended you select a narrow topic and discuss it comprehensively rather than a broad topic discussed briefly.

    Referencing
    The poster must include in-text references and references for any images (to comply with Copyright). All full-text references should appear as one list on the abstract reference list in APA format.

    Rubric:
    The rubric for this assessment task can be found at this link.

    Learning outcomes:
    This assessment task will allow students to demonstrate completion of the following unit learning outcomes:

  1. demonstrate an understanding of the 'deteriorating patient' and patients being cared for in the critical care nursing environments of emergency department, coronary care unit, high dependency and intensive care, including related anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, diagnostics, pharmacokinetics, pharmodynamics, the quality use of medicines and complementary therapies;

  2. apply comprehensive assessment and evidence based clinical reasoning with initiative and judgement in theoretical, clinical and simulated environments related to critical care nursing;

  3. demonstrate the capacity to analyse, integrate and apply principles of ethical and legal practice to person centred care in the critical care environment;

  4. further develop an understanding of health professions' roles and responsibilities when caring for the 'deteriorating patient' in the acute care setting and develop an understanding of health professional roles and interventions in critical care environments.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate an understanding of the 'deteriorating patient' and patients being cared for in the critical care nursing environments of emergency department, coronary care unit, high dependency and intensive care, including related anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, diagnostics, pharmacokinetics, pharmodynamics, the quality use of medicines and complementary therapies;

  2. apply comprehensive assessment and evidence based clinical reasoning with initiative and judgement in theoretical, clinical and simulated environments related to critical care nursing;

  3. demonstrate the capacity to analyse, integrate and apply principles of ethical and legal practice to person centred care in the critical care environment;

  4. apply effective practice and intra- and interprofessional communication strategies to facilitate the delivery of safe, quality care to people in diverse settings; and

  5. further develop an understanding of health professions' roles and responsibilities when caring for the 'deteriorating patient' in the acute care setting and develop an understanding of health professional roles and interventions in critical care environments.

    ABSTRACT
    INTRODUCTION

Sepsis is a life-threatening c
ondition. This situation arises when body tries to fight with the infection prevailing in the body. It is a response of the immune system towards the infection. In case of infection, body normally releases chemicals to fight the problem (Singer et al., 2016). Sepsis occurs when the amount of chemical is more than the requirement of the body. This causes changes in the body, which ultimately damages the vital organs. This can lead to the death of a person. Older people, pregnant women, newborn child, and people suffering from chronic diseases are the most vulnerable to this condition (Vincent, Taccone & He, 2017).
    DISCUSSION
    Progression of sepsis leads the person to the septic shock. This becomes the reason of the death. The earlier signs and symptoms of sepsis are very common. Hence, people hardly consider sepsis as cause of the disease. As mentioned by Zhang, Chen and Ni (2015), some of the symptoms of the disease are discolouration of skin in patches, decrease urination and abnormal breathing, increase respiratory rate, increase heart rate and decrease or increase in body temperature.
Pathophysiology
At the cellular level, sepsis includes change in functioning of the endothelial tissue, which consists of network of blood vessels in its inner surface. There is problem in blood clotting and blood flow. These changes initiated when cell releases short-lived proteins called cytokines in response to the infection in the body (Drosatos et al., 2015). This protein reacts with the endothelial tissue and damages or kills the endothelial cells. This interaction led to initiation of clotting factors. In a micro...
