Issue in the Article
The article discusses the growth aspect of Fast Growth 50 companies in Wales. These Companies are benchmark for creating wealth and employment in the Welsh economy. The stories of entrepreneurial individuals leading Fast growth 50 firms such as Jacquie Williams of SCS are inspirations to others. The issue is despite the phenomenal success of these individuals in developing their business; the research has shown that the growth by Fast Growth 50 companies is exceptions rather than norm and many firms have been still facing considerable challenge in sustaining growth over the long run.
One of the major growth barriers within these small firms is lack of skills among the founders and their resistance to change. This becomes further problematic when coupled with their reluctance to build an organizational structure to support the decision and a balanced management team. Such attitude among the entrepreneurs has been described as Founder’s Disease, which results in new venture of founders who are unwilling or unable to adapt according to the requirement of business as it grows.
Evaluation
If these entrepreneurs continue to lead the firms in the same way beyond start-up, the performance of the business in the future will be impaired. This is not astonishing, as the skills and ability required for starting the business are not those required later as the firm grows or consolidates.
Studies shows that entrepreneurs are required to have a high degree of both strategic and management skills for the growth of small company in the long run. And if entrepreneurs do not possess such skills and continue to lead the company beyond the start-up phase, the company’s performance may start suffering.
