Introduction and Project Background
The report is based on Microsoft Windows 10 mobile operating system. Microsoft as a company has been one of the giants in the software business. The reputation of tech companies in the market has been unparalleled. It is also one of the most financially successful companies in the world. Yet there have been few failures under its belt in the following years. The Windows mobile system for hardware to the software system has been a major failure of the company in recent years. The company's concept of building a unified platform of Windows 10 across all devices backfired due to its inconsistent and slow approach to the market. This caused huge losses in the form of acquisition. The report critically analyses the failure of the project and the reason behind its failure. Along with these all the major aspects in the project is discussed.
Project Life Cycle
The project was initially started in 2014 were the development team focused on building an OS, which was made for a unified apache across all the devices. The CEO of the company announced in 2014 the release of the next chapter. The Windows 10 OS will be compatible for all screen sizes and systems. The mobile version of Windows 10 OS was released a year later on new Lumia devices and upgradation to existing Windows phone (Novac et al. 2017). The OS system went through another phase of upgradation a year later in 2016 and then 3 months; later another update was rolled out. The financial update was rolled in January 2020 where the company announced the closure of the system and the exit for the Windows mobile market. The Windows 10 OS system was discontinued in 2017 itself and in 2018, no further updated were available for the customers (Shehu, 2018).
Reason for Undertaking
The specific reason for undertaking the project of building a new OS for the mobile version was the vision of the company to build a unified platform across all devices. The scope of having a unified platform in all devices was not clear with the approach Microsoft took in its OS for the mobile phone. The company upgraded the system of OS from Windows 8 and 8.1 to the Windows 10 system (Fernandez Celada, 2016). The initial thought was of unifying and bringing in a universal approach across all gadgets used by the consumers. Microsoft promised that the apps used in the desktop version could easily be transmitted to the mobile version, which will be based on a similar OS system. This was the main motive behind the launch of Windows 10 and third party app developers in the system.
Project Scope
The scale, at which the project was launched was a mammoth task. The acquisition of Nokia is bright in expertise for marketing and even the ability to enter the new and developing markets. The technical system in M was way ahead than the competitors apple and Google. When the project was launched, Google was scratching its way ahead with the android system. The company took the OS system with continuous upgradations checks. The main emotive was to create an ad platform for all screen sizes, which led to the ultimate downfall of the system. The apps based on the large screen had different user base and of the app for the mobile phone had a different user base. Third party apps developers did not agree with the scheme of things and the user experience model. The company also launched various devices under the system with the Intel and IMD the system on chips IA-32 was launched by the company. The Windows 10 OS system was launched on the 1 GB ram and 8GB internal storage system. A source of Lumia phones were launched with the Windows 10 system of the Lumia 950, 950xl and the 550.
Way the Project was Handled
The project was handled at too low and a too slow approach. The company invested slowly at the beginning of the Windows phone and Windows 10 system. The way the company added billions at the end of the project had it done. The system may have been a hit in the market. The system of development was also slow in the company. It had launched only two updates in its initial year and followed by other four updates in the coming three years. The company has a unique approach of making their OS platform for the big screen user and the mobile users the same. This made it possible to bring the apps used for the big screen to the mobile devices. This did not go down well with developers and had a lack of aps on the store for the users.
