Writing Assignment

Write a 300-500 word informative process analysis paper. Choose a process (history, ritual, event, routine, system, approach, method, practice, technique, program) you know well and describe it thoroughly and carefully. Remember that to be informative, you must be very familiar with the process you are describing.

Like all informative papers, keep your reader’s grasp and level of understanding as well as interest clearly in mind. Be sure you choose a process complex enough (at least 3, no more than 7 stages or steps) to interest and inform a reader, but not so intricate that you can’t cover the process thoroughly in 500 words. For example, changing a tire is too simple a topic; how the South lost the Civil war is too big a process for this paper. This is a narration because it is a series of events, and you may also use story or anecdote as example to enhance your explanations.

OUTLINE

Paragraph One:

Introduce topic

Establish your authority over the topic--state your experience with the process

In your last sentence write and underline your nutshell or thesis statement--a sentence that outlines the steps and stages of the process and suggests the approach you’ll be taking towards the material.

(For example, if my topic is teaching the young horse to load in a horse trailer, my nutshell sentence might be: Using the Lyon’s method for trailer training, I’ll discuss, making your trailer safe and ready, introducing your horse to the forward cues, making the first step inside, the system of reward and punishment, the importance or patience, what to expect at each stage, and the follow-up necessary to load anytime, anywhere, any trailer.)

Paragraph Two: Stage or step One or materials and preparation for step one.

Paragraph Three: Step two -- use specific details--remember good informative writing uses concrete language and specific examples.

Paragraph Four: Step three, four, five, etc

Conclusion: Review the steps, then describe the final product.
