The Little Mermaid
The little mermaid is a fairy-tale story written by Hans Christian Andersen who was a
Danish author. It was later released as a movie by the same title by Walt Disney Pictures in 1989. The movie maintains the plot of the written story where Ariel, a mermaid, falls in love with a human prince. In order to attain her love, she makes a bargain with the sea witch Ursula sacrificing her tongue for a pair of legs and then meeting the prince as a human. However, the ending has been changed to a happy ending with Ariel and the Prince getting married, which was not the case in the written story.
The story of The Little Mermaid is appealing to children because of the fantastic idea of a sea life that matches that of the land life. Also the portrayal of beautiful Ariel, who has the guts to go against the sea norms for what she believes in, is appealing to young girls. Even though the actual idea of rebelling against the society for just a man is twisted in the eyes of adults, to children it is heroic. The happy ending of a tragic beginning brings the fairy tale close to the hearts of little girls. The title ‘The Little Mermaid’ itself makes young girls associate with the character of Ariel and sends them the message that even though Ariel was ‘little’, she could get what she wanted in the end.
