WRITING A PROCESS DESCRIPTION OR A SET OF INSTRUCTIONS
A process description describes the steps in a given process. In a process description, the writer explains how something is done (how the respiratory system works; how a guitar is made). The goal is for the reader to
learn
something.
Instructions guide the reader step by step through a procedure (steps to changing a flat tire). The goal is for the reader to
do
something.
Guidelines:
ü
Begin with a statement of why your process is important.
ü
Provide a clear topic sentence: inform your reader that you will be presenting a series of steps.
ü
Include a list of any materials required.
ü
Ensure each step follows in chronological order.
ü
Be clear with your steps. Include specific details, measurements, or time requirements. Assume your reader is not familiar with this process. Don’t skip any steps.

Include a graphic. Your graphic should be relevant, simple/labelled, titled, referred to, cited.
ü
Clearly outline any hazards.
