As the literal meaning of the word, Trifles suggest anything that has very less importance and apparently, there are many "Trifles" in one act play by Susan Glaspell. Nevertheless, the underlying irony is that "Trifles" weight much more than what seem to be the real case. As the curtain of play lifts, we can see sympathetic nature of two of the lead characters Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters, evidence that the designated investigators fail to notice since they are oblivious to softer aspects that holds much importance to women such that joining the dots these Trifles things could analyses about the murder. Setting of the play is in the kitchen of abandoned home of John Wright where there are bundle of incomplete household chores. Entire kitchen is in complete disarray with dirty utensils, uncooked food, bread and dirty hand towels.
Plot - This play frames its theme in the initial part of the play as it evaluates the relations between the spouses and nature of marriage especially the one that ends up killing the spouse. A kitchen which is in disarray and completely messy depicts chaos in marriage. Secondly, women in the play stand close together that exhibits both might have faced in their marriage indicating very male-dominated culture but also shows loyalty to womanhood, this forms a central theme of the play and explored as an essence.
