Functions of minerals and water in the body
For most living organisms, minerals and water are among the essentials to proper health
and bodily functions.
In the context of nutrition, a mineral is a
chemical element required as an essential nutrient
by organisms to perform functions necessary for life [1] [2]. . Minerals are essential to body
structure and to muscle functions, fluid balance and nerve functioning. They make up about
4% of the human body. As we cannot produce minerals within our bodies, hence we must
obtain them through food. Nevertheless, they ultimately come from the earth [3]. Most of
the minerals in a human diet come from eating plants and animals or from drinking water [3]
[4].
These minerals are classified into; macro-minerals (major) and micro-minerals (minor).
Macro-minerals are the five major minerals calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, and
magnesium [1]. All of the remaining elements are called "trace elements" or micro-minerals.
The trace elements include are iron, iodine, selenium copper, zinc, cobalt, and manganese,
that have a specific biochemical function in the human body [5].
Minerals interact with each other, along with vitamins and other nutrients to maintain body
functions and health. Sources of minerals are plentiful; they can be found in both food and
plant sources. For example, Fluoride is found in drinking water.
Calcium is the most abundant mineral; it comprises almost half of the mineral content in the
body by making up bones. Although calcium is most commonly associated to healthy bones
and teeth, it’s also important for blood clotting, blood pressure, regulation, and immune
system regulation. We usually get calcium from various sources including milk and milk
products; canned fish with bones (salmon, sardines); fortified tofu and fortified soymilk; greens
(broccoli, mustard greens); legumes, etc.
