Title: Essay on Digging by Seamus Heaney
 

The poem “Digging” by Seamus Heaney is a reflective poem about the past. The poem is about how the author compares his
occupational difference with the likes of his ancestors. Digging describes how the father of the author worked in the hot sun which was similar to his grandfather. The poet recalls the moments he spent close to the window just listening to his father dig the earth with the spade. As he reminisces the memories, he realizes that he cannot follow the ancestor’s footsteps but can continue to survive by writing. The use of “Digging” consistently by Heaney conveys the theme of the poem i.e. the occupation which not only explains what his father and grandfather did for a living but is also used as a metaphor for making a living. Through the use of repetition, metaphor, and assonance, Seamus Heaney conveys the theme of the poem which is the ancestral occupation and the survival to make a living by digging. The poet also boasts about the ability of his grandfather in the respective occupation which was farming. This shows the pride he had in his ancestral occupation even though he chose a different path.
           As we read the poem, the author begins by using imagery of what he was recollecting as he was writing, an occupation he relished and used to communicate his thoughts. “The squat pen rests; snug as a gun” is a line that describes the joy of writing that the author starts his poem with (Heaney 2). The second paragraph is again the use of imagery that describes the childhood of the author as he sat across the window listening to the repeated sounds of the spade hitting the ground as his father kept digging.
