Introduction
This is usually called that immigrants and refugees may face numerous complexities as
they need to adjust according to the new surroundings and novel cultures. Such strange
environment can influence approximately all the aspects of life including nutrition, health,
education, and so on. In my opinion, an immigrant may also face emotional isolation. Here I
would like to describe experience gained by me when I came to USA before three years.
When I felt as an outsider
Though, I have to face several difficulties in beginning, but the major problem faced by
me in USA was “language barrier”. In fact, I am from a Middle-East country where English is
not the first language hence; I was not proficient in English. I often realized that such lack of
expertise in English was performing the role of barrier in my life since; it was stopping me from
making vital connections in the community I was residing at that time. Even my routine activities
like; taking a medium of transportation such as; bus, and shopping from a general store etc were
also being affected by it adversely. I can remember several incidences when I was hungry and
went to purchase food, but came back without it because I could not tell the salespersons what
exactly I needed.
Besides, such communication problem was also faced by me when I encountered a road
accident, and I could not make the cop understand that it was not me, but the car driver who was
responsible for that accident. The similar problem came into existence in a hospital from where I
returned home without treatment as; I could not tell the doctor what my health complication was,

and when he tried to identify it then I could not understand his questions as well. Moreover, on
one occasion, I forgot the way unfortunately, and again I was helpless as; I could not ask the
people what the correct route was.
Ultimately, I decided to learn English and thus; went to a public library to search for
basic literature related with this language, but it was not easily...
