Discovery:
Ribonucleolytic activity was first observed in the bovine pancreas. In ruminant stomach large
amount of RNA molecules are produced by stomach. That’s why ribonucleolytic activity is very
high in the ruminant pancreas, it has led to the discovery of Ribonuclease A. Rnase A is the
unmodified form and predominant in the pancreas of Bos taurus. Other forms of ribonuclease are
Rnase B, Rnase C etc. which are less abundant in bovine pancreas. The essential role of Rnase A
was recognized in 1972.
The work of Jones in 1920 is usually cited as the “beginning” of pancreatic ribonuclease
(Richards and Wycoff 1971). Dubos and Thompson in 1938 first isolated Rnase and it was
crystallized by Kunitz in 1940.
Several researchers had worked on its structure, function, folding etc and many of them got
Nobel prize for their historic work.
