LINSTEAD MARKET
Linstead market is a folk song of Jamaica, situated in the Caribbean Sea. The folk song is of mento type which means it is a combination of African and European musical elements. This folk song started to flourish in the 1940s and 1950s and was greatly influenced by reggae and ska music. The mento type music typically used musical instruments like acoustic Spanish guitar, drums, banjo and rhumba box popularly known as marimbula which is like a box and can be sat on while playing music.
The song Linstead market was sung by many singers. The tune of the song is in accordance of the words of the book Jamaican song and story published in 1907 by Walter Jekyll. In page number 219 to 220 the lyrics of the songs is as below:
