Shutter Island
Shutter Island is a psychological thriller story that tells us about the various labels such as insane, crazy or mental as society or people in general try to enforce on us. It portrays well the
psychological treatments one needs and one gets and specifically the way, society treats a psychologically ill person. Shutter Island does have plot where in year 1954, US Marshal Edward “Teddy” Daniels along with his partner named Chuck Aule travels to the Aschecliffe hospital for the people who are labeled as criminally insane and are kept in Boston Harbor’s shutter Island. Marshals are seen investigating the missing of one of the criminal patient name Rachel Solando who was incarcerated for drowning down her 3 children. Delusions are also depicted throughout movie as Teddy is not a real person but is a delusion created by Andrew. Also, Andrew is a war veteran who has experienced adverse family events and has done and seen much violence during war. Andrew gets flashbacks of war time along with having conflicts regarding the psychology in midst of profound change. Traditional inhumane treatment in asylum’s patients is shown which is evidenced in movie along with mentioning the psychoanalysis advancements. Andrew himself labels Richard as criminal twice in the beginning but was immediately corrected by the Doctor as they are being treated and taken as patients and not the criminals. Empathy is shown by doctors while treating them as they are being labeled as insane by society already. Also Andrew is being encouraged to act out his delusion by his psychiatrist hoping that this will dispel it but role play fails. There is relapse of insanity after a brief recovery and thus it is taken off as lobotomized. Shutter Island shows a story having fictional depiction of patient abuse. Lobotomies were practiced in 1950s to calm or tame severely problematic or violent patients. But these lobotomies are not much practiced today as this procedure caused large number of deaths.
