Write a reserch essay onany theme, character, motif, orsymbol(s) in Richard Wagamese'sIndian HorseorNino Ricci'sLives of the Saints.
Recall the skills you learned in College English and Introduction to Research to develop an essay (Introduction, 2-3 Main Points, Conclusion).
Essential Features of Your Essay:

  • Analytical in nature

  • 3-4 pages in length

  • Formatting: double spaced, Times New Roman font, 12pt font

  • Clear thesis statement supported by 2-3 main points and details from the primary sources to illustrate your points

  • Consult secondary source academic materials (books and academic journals - preferably a combination of the two)

  • Use the Modern Language Association documentation system for citing sources (in-text citations and 'Works Cited' page)

  • When offering a quotation for consideration/illustration/analysis, set up the quotation properly and follow it with analysis (insight as to why/how it is relevant to your point

  • Please remember that you must use compelling details and verbatim quotes from the novel to illustrate and explain your point.
Remember: your essay should not be descriptive or summary in nature; your thesis and paper should argue a narrowed point about the novel. The thesis should be focused thought that provides insightful analysis about some specific aspect of the novel. It should not state the obvious like plot summary or character and/or theme description.
    Example of narrowed focus:
Explain what hockey means to Saul and his identity...is it a metaphor for something significant?
Vittorio's perception of reality is heavily affected by his memories, visions, and dreams as well as by forces of superstition and luck...providential forces (greater forces) rather than sociological and psychological forces.

important to have certain personality traits. In fact, human life and success are incomplete without mentioning about the hardships and that is precisely the approach of Richard Wegamese in his famous 2012 novel Indian Horse. Saul, the protagonist of the novel, shows perseverance as a major characteristic of his personality and this leads him to become an exceptional fighter.
His perseverance is seen in his fight against racial bullying at the residential school as well as in his extraordinary performance in hockey (Robinson). The traces of white abduction and influence are also seen in his childhood life when he is saved by his grandmother but his own approach to understand and deal with problems is remarkable throughout the novel.
At first, it is significant to note here that Saul is gifted with the power of vision, a quality that helps him connect with his ancestral roots. For example, his life at the God’s Lake in the company of Naomi, his grandmother, makes him closely associated with his ancestors who not only used to speak native language but also they had knowledge of farming (Whetten).
