Spirituality and Social work in Martin Luther King’s Sermon
Spirituality has come about to be viewed as an area of life detached from the social life of ma
sses, especially after the advent of technology, spread of knowledge and popularity of materialism. This trend popularized itself majorly after Renaissance when the western culture decided to rebel against the Church (Metzner, 1993). However, the deep connection between spirituality, freedom and social work manifested itself in different forms, later on, as the different populations of the world struggled against inequality, oppression and subjugation. The masses eventually rallied for the inherent right of man to be free- a right bestowed upon him by God.
As an activist and advocate of equality, social work and freedom, Martin Luther King, was one of the pioneers of this thought. His life and works illustrate regarding the way he felt about the concepts of Spirituality and Social work. King believed that these two concepts are intertwined and lend credibility to each other (Powell, 2003). He emphasized this in his life, works and speeches. A fine example of his beliefs is his speech on the “Drum Major Instinct” delivered at Ebenezer Baptist Church. In this speech he stated how the need for being first, or forefront, is inherent in human beings. However, spirituality, and in this particular case, the Church, teaches us to be first in serving mankind, i.e. social works (King Jr, 1968).
