Write a profile of one of your teachers for your college or university's student newspaper or public affairs newsletter. Interview your source for at least 45 minutes. Be sure that you observe his or her natural surroundings. What clues to character can you find in your professor's office? Consider your subject's appearance carefully. Be sure you note details—like the color of hair and eyes—details so specific that, after reading your story, readers could identify this person from, say, five other people in a group. Look for physical characteristics or mannerisms that reveal character: laugh lines, tapping feet, hands flying around while he or she talks. Which details would you include? How will you find out biographical information about this professor? Does your college public relations office give out vitae (resumes) of staff? Are vitae on file in department offices or the campus library? Has the professor written any books? Are they listed in Books in Print? How much negative and how much positive material will be in your portrait? Which is the best representation of reality, as you experienced the interview? After you've written a full profile, distill what you've written into a six-paragraph sketch.
