Introduction
American political democracy is complex structure in which, the power to rule is centralized but at the same time, it is divided under the authority of the electoral votes required to become the president. The senators who hold this authority are chosen by people in their respective states and as it happens in democracy, the popularity of a senator makes his election campaign remarkable because those who work well appear among the voters with pride and dignity; they have strong sense of victory for their upcoming elections –or at least, the voting percentage and swings shown through pre election polls prove it. [footnoteRef:2] Arizona has been one of such election campaigns which has gained national popularity and interest of the two major parties, Republicans and the Democrats and it is due to the efforts of the present senator Mark Kelley who took the senate position as mid-term election but now, for the upcoming senate elections in 2022, he is fully prepared to launch his election campaign. The Democratic Shift
The first major standpoint in the context of general elections of Arizona so far is the fact that the region has remained under the dominance of Republicans—the purple has always controlled the state politics or as they say, it is the belief of people that progress remains in the hands of republicans.[footnoteRef:3] In the past five elections, a consecutive victory of republicans shows how much impact they have over the political scenario of the nation. In the last twenty five years in particular, the count of public has remained complex, intriguing but still, very much interesting to the scholars of politics in America.[footnoteRef:4] [3: ibid] [4: D'Alessio, Dave, and Mike Allen. They have been criticized under the name of showing Republican spirit all the time until, in the last presidential election; there is a swing of fortune which has shifted general voter towards Democrats. However, this shift did not go unnoticed; a political surge in the US Congress took place, claims of Paul Gosar in the House were depicting that scam had taken place in electoral votes and they should be challenged. In this dramatic episode, it was clear that the shift from republicans to democrats was unexpected move of general public. Mike Kelley’s victory is another landmark, showing the shift of attention of common people, regarding the efforts of the senator in public even though he was not in power at that time.
Additionally, one should note the victory margins as they have declined over the past few elections. In 2012, senator Rommey could score marginal defeat of 12% and for Donald Trump, it was just 3.5%. Even the victory margin of Joe Biden is not that much which was expected but still, the potential source of past few victories, margins and democratic shift of voters has a certain cause which can be referred as the foundation factor for the election campaign of Mike Kelley.[footnoteRef:5] The number of independent voters in Arizona is 1.3 million plus, creating combating scenarios for both the parties. In the 2020 election campaigns, these voters contributed significantly by participating in the anti-incumbency against republic governance.[footnoteRef:6] At the same time, this participation was based on the wellbeing of the independent voters as well as on their mentality to vote for the right candidate, as per their choices and preferences. Here, it should also be noted that the Mike targeted not only the democrat voters because they were favourable; he also proposed possible solutions to the general issues faced by the independent voters in Arizona. The common concerns of people were to deal with the social and economic security of the boarder communities as well as the employment status based reforms for the local people. A long time driven debate was pending in House for the general wellbeing of Arizonians as they wanted someone to advocate for their alleviation of social and economic standards.[footnoteRef:7] The core strength of Kelley’s campaign targeted exactly the same thing and he actually has firmly created the ground for the next election cycle as well. His works are so far commendable and they are, as per the press releases mentioned below, quite promising towards ensuring reclaiming of the seat. The discussion over what Kelley has achieved after gaining the position of senator is highlighted below...
