Introduction
Pre-operative and post-operative wound management is very important for doctors and nursing staff in a hospital because if wound is not immediately closed then the wound would be infected by bacteria and fungi. This will deteriorate the healing process of wound and can even lea
d to severe systemic complications. Various tropical antimicrobials are used for wound dressing. Currently, silver dressings are being widely used because of its broad antimicrobial and antifungal properties. Many commercial silver dressings are available and it was found out by Cavanagh, Burrell, & Nadworny (2010) that among the six different types of silver dressings tested by them, zones of inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus was produced by nanocrystalline silver, silver collagen matrix and silver alginate dressings and this indicates efficacy of silver dressings in healing wounds. This also proves that both conformability of dressing and availability of silver at the surface of wound may be significant to make the antimicrobial function of the dressing most beneficial. It has also been proved that health care associated infections can also be decreased by proper education of the health care professionals.
Evaluation of importance and effectiveness of Silver dressings
Silver has significant antimicrobial activity and it is effective even many strains of bacteria which are resistant to antibiotics. Recently silver dressings are used increasingly in wound dressings to reduce the count of bacteria in wounds. Silver may be integrated into dressings in a large number of physical and chemical forms, most commonly elemental silver or silver in the ionic state is used. The ionic form of silver (Ag+) has been confirmed to have a broad spectrum effect of microorganisms which promotes the process of healing. The ionic form of silver binds to the cell membranes of bacteria which results in disruption of cell wall of bacteria and ultimately leakage of cell organelles. They also interfere with production and functions of enzymes as well as with replication process. In a study conducted by Beele, Meuleneire, Nahuys, & Percival (2010), it was proved that ionic silver alginate/carboxy methyl cellulose dressing (SAMC) has greater efficiency to prevent wound infection from spreading and also has greater wound healing capacity as compared to non silver calcium alginate fibre dressing (AF). Silver has been used as contemporary antimicrobial agent in wound care since almost a decade. For example, it has used in its solid elemental form in silver wires to prevent or manage infection. It has also been used as solutions of silver salts (eg. AgNO3) to clean wounds and of late creams or ointments (silver sulfadiazine cream) also contain a silver–antibiotic compound
A large variety of silver dressings for wounds have been recently developed which are easier to use and help in maintenance of most wound environment.
According to a statistical data it was proved that wound dressing containing silver sulphate (Aepilax...
