Robert H. Whittaker (1969), an American taxonomist, divided the living world into five kingdoms: Monera (e.g. Bacteria), Protista (e.g. Slime molds, Diatoms) , Fungi (e.g. Mushrooms, moulds), Plantae, Animalia. In this classification, organisms were provided proper place from the point of view of their structure and evolution. Kingdom Monera can be divided into two groups: Eubacteria (Cyanobacteria) and Archaebacteria (Methanogens). This scheme is widely accepted now. Whittaker based his scheme of classification on five factors: 1) Complexity of cell structure, 2) Complexity of organism body, 3) Mode of Nutrition, 4) Life styles, 5) Phylogenetic relationships.
