NIST is the National Institute of Standards and Technology special publication which is used as a guideline for privacy and security control and protec
tion of the Federal Information Systems and Organization. It is a non-statutory organization of the United States commerce and business unit and is used to set and promote industry standards which help the federal agencies to establish and congregate the wants of FISMA or Federal Information Security Management Act. Thus, NIST SP is formed to enhance the protection of the federal information and database management system and to store, process and transmit information in a structured pattern for the federal government. NIST SP 800-116 R1 was a revision released on June 1st 2018, for the correct way to use PIV – Personal Identification Verification credentials to securely use the Physical Access Controls Systems (PACS). NIST SP 800-116 R1 deals with strategies which are risky and hazardous to select appropriate procedure to implement the authentication mechanism of Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 201 and other allied information. The personal identification verification mechanism is used to store the personal data elements contained within protected and hardware sheltered storage vicinity of the PIV smart card chip. These verification methods are controlled and supervised by the PACS which integrates the PIV smart card readers at various facility management ends like the gates, secured doors and automates gates or turnstiles.
