Introduction
Aren`t I a Woman is a book written by Deborah Gray White deals with the subject of slavery of the women of the plantation South. The book depicts the problems of slavery and sexism that were faced by the
black women in the white society. This assignment would incorporate the major arguments that the writer wants to present regarding the pathetic condition of the women in the male dominated society. The struggles of how the black women fought for their rights in the reconstruction South were elucidated in the book as well.
White sets a very angry tone throughout the book in order to show her disgust about the ill-treatment of the women in the free society. The book illuminates the views of the readers regarding slavery of women. In the book, White addresses to all the men in the society who do not consider their opposite gender to be in an equal position in the society. White expresses her sorrow and states that the black women were treated as slaves in the male dominated and white society for many years. They were devoid of their rights to live a quality life and have access to education. Black women were considered to be inferior to that of the other gender and were treated inhumanly. In the patriarchal society, the men had a control of the political as well as the household structure. The women had to raise children and to manage the household chores (Jeslin et al., 2019).
But White states that the slave women had the same capabilities as their male counterparts. They are self-reliant and this shoes that they had a dominant position both in the household as well as in the society. The slave women suffered from two folds in the society- one on the basis of racism and the other on the basis of sexism. White points out that it is even worse to know that the self-styled god men are defining the role of the black women in the society, when in the very first place they do not have any idea about the struggles that the black women have to face even in the recent times. An Irish man named Daniel advised that the role of the black women is debilitating for the black men to a large extent and so the men should stay away from the women and take refuge in the military forces. These stereotyping of the image of women infuriates White and she expresses her anger through her book. In particular White is mad at Calvin Hernton who is a sociologist as he stated that the due to racism and slavery the black women have turned out to be ‘sturdy’. He added that the hardships that the black women had to face in the society on a daily basis have helped them in making them stronger and more rigid as in comparison to the previous times. White argues that ever since the early times, the women were labelled in different manners. Since centuries black women have been referred to as promiscuous who panted every time she had sex...
