Palliative care is a healthcare segment that works for the betterment of the quality of life of the patients who are a victim of life threatening diseases by preventing the cause of their suffering through the process of identifying the cause of the suffering as early as possible, understanding of pain, proper treatment of the pain and other problems that are psychological, physical as well as spiritual. There is also a different branch only for children called palliative care for children. This branch concentrates only on the chronic disorders and suffering faced by children and helps them to get over their pain by early identification of the root cause of their pain. Palliative care is an essential part of the healthcare segment and it is very important to ensure low pain and suffering, not only for the patients but also for the family members of those particular patients.
There are so many different functions of a palliative care team. Let us discuss some.
Palliative care team works for providing pain relief. This is the main objective of the team, although, the team has got many other functions as well. This is the team that considers and confirms life and death as a normal and a very natural process. We sometimes find people or healthcare workers hasten death or even postpone death through ventilation and other artificial processes. But the palliative care team does not do any of that, they let the patient live as long as they can naturally and let them die when it is about time. Now, if we realize it or not, but people have psychological and spiritual needs. Palliative care team is also responsible for taking care of such psychological and spiritual aspects of a patient, as well as the patient’s family in times of need. This team functions as the backbone of a patient suffering from a life-threatening disease because they help and support the patient to be strong and active as long as possible through natural processes. Sometimes the family of the patient becomes restless due to the imbalance caused in their family or due to many other factors.
