Typically when a problem occurs, governments will call on an expert group to investigate the problem and make recommendations for how the problem may be prevented or addressed in future. In the case of outbreaks, the recommendations developed by the expert group may then form a set of guidelines and become government policy on how to deal with outbreaks in future. When you work for an organisation it is very important to consider the impact of a problem, what strategies have been tried in the past, what is currently being done by other organisations, what issues have occurred when trying to tackle the problem and finally where and how do we tackle the problem in the future. This series of steps is often used to develop policy in an organisation. This method should be considered when formatting your report to the Health Minister. To practice writing a report in this format, we will use the example of a current major world problem.   You may select one of the following three world challenges Control of HIV transmission Worldwide eradication of Polio Virus Prevention of Malaria Science magazine runs public health articles called “Policy Forum”. Your task is to write a policy forum article concerning one of the above world challenges. As an example of a policy forum, use Science Magazine’s 9 Sept 2005 issue (Vol 309), page 1680-1. The format for your report should be in the following paragraphs (helps us mark the report). You do not have to use columns for your report. an opening paragraph describing the current impact of the disease a second paragraph with an overview of the main strategies historically used to control the disease Paragraphs 3 and 4: examples of current strategies used and organisations implementing them, with references Paragraph 5: current problems faced in controlling the disease (use news reports, try the news part of Google) A concluding paragraph with prognosis for this disease’s control and suggestions for how policy change may help Referencing should be provided (10% of mark). The report must not be plagiarised. Workshop 3 objectives 1. Collect information on the impact of a disease and summarise this as an introduction to policy report. 2. Examine the strategies that have been used in the past to control this disease. 3. Evaluate the strategies of at least two approaches used that have been found to have some merit and report on the impact of those two approaches. 4.
