The impact of plastic pollution is recognised as a significant environmental threat. “With no improvements to managing waste beyond what’s already in place today, 99 million tons of uncontrolled plastic waste would end up in the environment by 2030,” asNational Geographic'sLaura Parker observes (2020).

You are a public relations officer for one of the following organisations (choose one only) and have been tasked with developing a media kit that communicates your organisation’s commitment to eliminating the use of plastic. You are encouraged to be creative in developing strategies that your organisation can use to eliminate plastic:

  • Victorian State Government

  • A major Australian supermarket chain (Woolworths or Coles)

  • A global fast-food brand (KFC or McDonalds)

The media kit must include a media release, media backgrounder, and a fact sheet. Students must adhere to the word limit for each component. Workshops will be held during the semester to enable students to develop their media kit writing skills.

Media Release: designed to gain the media’s attention. The release should be engaging, factual, include quotes and provide news “hooks”.

Media Backgrounder: details information about the organisation, its position on the issue of plastic pollution and what it proposes to do to eliminate the use of plastic.

Fact Sheet: provides statistics and relevant information on the issue of plastic pollution.

Supporting images can be incorporated into the documents or included as a separate document. A minimum of two relevant images to be included.

Presentation requirements:Submit as a Word Document or .RTF.

PDF documents are permitted for the Fact Sheet only.

Majority of business today is based on linear model of consumption of goods as well as production. It has dominated traditional form of the business which is based on the global economy basically manufacturing the used, vended, raw-materials as well as can be regarded as waste. Essentially, this model is based on the classic, "take-make-dispose" phenomenon while depending on resources as well as
energy that are accessible easily (Baertlein, L., 2018). However, these operations impact the economy and the environment in the long run. There are various countries who are trying to move from linear form of economy to circular economy. One of the leading example of implementing the circular economy is McDonalds. For reducing the sheer quantity of the waste, it is crucial to recycle the resources as well as materials that focuses on improving internal operations. By the virtue of this report, I have extensively researched on McDonalds and how the company has completely changed their style of packaging in order to ensure complete sustainability of the environment (BBC News., 2018).
McDonalds is one of the most prestigious fast-food franchise business. It was established in the year 1948 however, today there are 36,000 restaurants that present in more than 90 countries (Chapman, B., 2018). Overall business model of McDonald is based on the cost-efficiency. They are accountable for massive pollution caused by plastic materials used in their products. Today, accumulation of plastic in the sea and ocean can create enormous damage to the marine life as well as biggest source of landfills. During the last annual year, more than 350 million tons of plastic waste produced. There is a single concentration of plastic products which are perhaps cheap and easy to produce that might be hard to recycle. Identification of Problem - The critical issue is with excessive dependence of the company on plastic as well as paper. Technically, these should be properly segregated into recyclable and those what are biodegradable. The bigger problem for the company is to create a better product packaging which is bio-degradable and reduces the overall impact on environment (Chapman, B., 2018).
Furthermore, McDonalds are known for their plastic toys given with each burger meal such that the overall product offerings looks far more appealing to children. However, these toys are made with low grade plastic which is difficult to recycle. Essentially, these plastic toys are critical part of their product offerings which is very hard to recycle. These toys are very cheap, easy to break, almost impossible to recycle and even repair. The struggle for McDonalds is to discover new initiatives for the single-use of plastic toys such that value offerings are comply with sustainable ways of operations (Densham, A., 2017).

In the present dynamics, it demonstrates how businesses are misusing the resources which is no longer an acceptable model. Overall impact of pollution especially from plastic is one of the most recognized environmental issue (Greenpeace., 2006).There many challenges witnessed in the present linear economy for the production of food, as the demand for particular product increases so does the supply to fulfil that demand. There are serious drawbacks with present ways of working in the linear economy since there are lack of solution for advancing demand for perishable products. This also increases wastage of materials as well as contributes in pollution. Primary reason that backs the loss of natural capital in the linear economy since it doesn’t focuses on recycling of raw materials as well as existing products (Jurgilevich et al., 2016). While working on the production of food, eutrophication as well as excessive amount of carbon dioxide are critical elements that is released in the process that impacts the environment. Undoubtedly, food economy are working on inefficient ways of working resulting in excessive overhead as well as consumption of natural resources, productivity and energy (Ellen Macarthur Foundation, 2013). Deep diving into McDonald's the critical...
