Focusing on the poem “I’m Home Again”, write an essay that highlights how Indigenous poetry play an important role in the construction of an aesthetic identity and culture for the Indigenous communities of Canada in the 21st century. Refer to the essay “The Uses of Indigenous Literature” to illustrate/ elaborate on the social function of Indigenous literature. Add a Works Cited page at the end of your essay and include both the poem and the essay in this list.

In the introduction clearly identity the topos (of the poem). You should also have a clear thesis statement in the introduction that addresses the following question:


How does the poem “I’m Home Again” create an aesthetic identity for the Indigenous communities of Canada?

Indigenous poetry pertains to project the transformation of viewpoints that the community people have to go through due to the changes in their native lands. The poets like Lee Maracle, in their poetic sense, tend to explore these changes in the places which belonged to them on ancestral grounds but they had to move on due to the fact that they were bound to leave those places in the name of colonial expansions. Lee approaches the sensitive subject of return to the homelands. It is not an easy task to accomplish because the way land used to be is no longer available for him i.e. there are great deal of changes which have taken place over the course of years. Lee’s approach in writing the poem I Am Home Again is to present the social and economical changes that have shaped the entire region from a new perception and it is his perception that has to be aligned with the newly established social order though, as for nature, it is the same thing for him to see.
    At first, it is significant to note here that Lee is of the view that changes are positive and negative both to a particular place because these changes serve as the points or factors that give aesthetic beauty to the place. The poem demonstrates that the process of creating this new cultural and aesthetic identity is difficult. The process includes a thorough study of the condition / status of indigenous languages and cultures and the potential compromise of adopting the English language as the future language of indigenous literature, the settler language associated with the residential school system and its current detrimental effect on the indigenous community.
