This assessment requires you to provide complexity and critical understanding of your responsibilities as you transition to the role of a RN

The aimof this important assessment is for you to demonstrate reflective critical thinking skills and an understanding of your communication skills while transitioning to the role of RN.Your reflection will expresses your understanding of your new RN responsibilities you are assuming in the context oftherapeutic communication with your patient & communication with your peers.

Reflection in this context of this scenario will let you examine your professional communication style in relation to the observed scenario & how you would improve, revise and interact with the patient in the scenario. These improvements and revisions are in the context of the RN Standards / Communication.

You are asked to view a nominated nursing communication scenario and as a future registered nurse reflect on the following using Gibbs Cycle for reflection (diagram below) ;

1.What Happened?

2.What were you thinking feeling?

3.What was good and bad about the experience?

4.What sense can you make of the situation?

5.What else could you have done?

6.If it arose again what would you do? (identify 2 Standards of Professional Practice and 2 communication strategies)

Referencing:You are required to reference each issue you refer by referring to the NMBA Standards of RN Practice (2016) and Health Communication literature using the American Psychological Association (APA) style.

Remember:you are reflecting on your understanding of the RN Standards for Practice and how you can apply these to the communication process - thereby demonstrating your transition to RN practice.

Ensure you review and read the reflective writing tutorial in Module 5 Part Aon reflection and understand how reflection improves your understanding and learning of any situation.

Finally, students need to include reflection; ( which in incorporated in the Gibbs cycle Reflection pdf)

  • What you have identified in the Therapeutic Communication video. What are the main professional and communication issues? How has this experience changed your thinking about health and/or the role of the nurse?

  • What do YOU think are the main contributions to the issues?

  • What has challenged your assumptions around this process and what you have discovered in your observations and research?

  • What Professional Standards of Practice and communication strategies should have been applied?

  • Can you identify any elements within this scenario that has enabled you to see more indirect aspects that impact on the communication with individuals?

  • Can you identify 2 Standards of Professional Practice and 2 communication strategies that could be applied the scenario and how would this change the outcome?

HINT: It is preferred that you use theGibbs Reflection Cyclein your academic reflection practice. You can learn about this way of thinking by going to the following web page on the Federation website, or you could do your own Google search to learn more. Please also see the diagram example below with suggestion for this topic. Use the marking guide to ensure you address the task requirements.

Gibbs Cycle
Introduction
This is about a Therapeutic Communication Video in which it is shown how a patient is told is told about her cancer by the doctor and then how the nurse communicates with the patient about the details. Gibbs Reflection Cycle is a method for the analysis of any situatio
n according to the observations and then feelings experienced during observation. The systemic analysis of the situation would allow the better planning of any such situation experienced in future.
Description
In the given Therapeutic Communication Video, Bronwyn has been called back after the investigations for her breast lump i.e. mammogram and biopsy. Her GP has called her to discuss her test results which have confirmed that she has metastatic breast cancer. In the video, it has been shown that the patient is pacing back and forth in her waiting room as she is very anxious about her test results. Along with her, John and Taylah, her family, are also present in the video in both the waiting room and consultation room. The video proceeds and the doctor tells the patient honestly that the test results of her breast lump have been shown positive for metastatic breast cancer.
The patient who was already anxious now goes into disbelief, her family does not show much reaction to the news and stare at her surprised. Bronwyn has hardly digested the news when the doctor explains further that the small lump in her breast is cancer that has started spreading to her whole body. The patient keeps asking how is that possible and why did this happen to her. The doctor then asks her if she has any other complaints like any pain or discomfort. She confirms that she has been experiencing lower back pain since a few weeks. Then the doctor introduces her to the nurse who further explains the disease and how it is to be managed. The nurse tells her that she would fix her appointment with an oncologist who would guide her further with chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Feelings
The most significant emotion that I felt during the video was that of sadness mixed with certain amount of sympathy. It was really sad to look at the lady who was so shocked to hear the news about her cancer. The lady in the video must have thought that it was just a normal lump in her breasts but it came out to be breast cancer. And the cancer was metastatic i.e. it was spreading to her whole body. This added up to her anxiety and grief. I was feeling really sad for the lady and the situation she was facing.
Another part of my feelings was sympathy as I could not find that feeling with the patient’s family members or even the healthcare staff. I felt that the lady was all alone in her fight against the anxiety and then the consultation that she was being given. She should have been hugged by her family members as a gesture to show that they were all with her. But, she kept sitting there with her family and wondering what happened to her all of a sudden. Thus, my heart went out to the lady and I felt that she really needed...
