This is so embedded in society in the United States that the “pursuit of happiness” is written into the Constitution. But when people focus on pursuing happiness, they are not paying attention to the present. Everyone needs to be aware of what they currently have and what others currently need. Ultimately, being aware will allow people to be content, which is greater and more rewarding than most people’s definition of happiness. For instance, according to Joshanloo and Weijers, “Happiness defined as satisfaction with life” (220) may sound like a good idea to some, but the problem is how people evaluate their level of satisfaction. Very few people in the United States remember to count their blessings. They are always searching for ways to get more money so they can buy more material items or so they can save for the future. These people are so busy working or coming up with plans to make lots of money that they do not appreciate what they have, especially when it comes to relationships. What good is having money if there is no time to spend with the people who matter most? The latest video game system or flatscreen TV will not be very helpful to a person who is ill and needs assistance. But many Americans have traded quality time for materialistic things, and they even teach their children that possessions are more valuable than memories. This concept becomes even more of a problem when people do not recognize how they can be of service to others. If a child sits at lunch with a full sandwich and realizes that his classmate has nothing to eat, it is better to share, so that each child has half a sandwich. This will allow both of them to be content, and that will lead to happiness. The child who shared his sandwich will be happy knowing that he did something good for someone else, and the child who originally had nothing will be happy that someone saw him and was kind. If everyone in the world acted in this manner, then it would be a much better place to live. Being content is important. When someone has too much, more than they need, then it makes sense for them to share. Certainly there will be people who take advantage of others’ generosity, and those are the people who are pursuing their own happiness at the expense of other people. Happiness is an extreme, and everyone should seek moderation, which is the best way to be satisfied.
