03_outline_essay 1 Course Name: Introduction to Psychology (Hybrid or Online) Course Code: PSY 1050 and PSY 1060 Instructor: Derek Newman -- Outline: Assignment #2 - Essay Outline 1 – Students will pick three concepts from the course, define them, and then link the concepts as to how it could assist with an area of their life. 2 – FAQs on the ‘area of life’ are on page three of this handout. Marking Scheme - Rubric 1 – Within the assignment dropbox (in Moodle, under the module, “Assignment Outlines”), you will find the rubric for the essay. Please read very carefully and check- off that you have the requirements before submission. Due Date - Monday, December 6th by 9:00am - Format: PDF - File name: “essay_yourlastname” (example: essay_newman) - FAQ: why do we have to name the file so specifically? - Answer: instructor will be checking each essay for plagiarism. The file name allows for a quick and easy check of the plagiarism score. Instructor Tips – Introduction and Thesis Statement 1 – For the introduction (about a page, double spaced), introduce and define the subject/field of psychology. After identifying it, explain to the reader why, in general, the field of psychology is important in many areas. 2 - The last line of your introduction could read (using ‘academics’ as the area of life): “Three areas in the field of psychology that could improve academics include X, Y and Z”. 3 – The “X, Y, and Z” would be concepts from the course. For example, classical conditioning, operant conditioning and the foot in the door phenomenon. 2 Structure Requirements – Instructor Notes 1 – Below is some sample wording for the structure requirement (see rubric) of this essay. 2 – Please note, the requirements are (1) a transition word, (2) thesis reinforcement, and (3) point or topic of the body paragraph. Wording can be changed but the requirements must be there to gain full marks. 3 – Instructor will be emailing out a reminder about structure, with some tips, as we get closer to the due date. Student FAQ: can I use the sample wording below? Answer: yes. Structure Requirements – Sample Wording Sample Format - Body Paragraphs 1) Transition word + thesis reinforcement + point 2) Explain “X” 3) Examples “X” 4) Link “X” to thesis 5) Transition word + thesis reinforcement + point Example – Body Paragraph “X” (using 'should be' as the thesis) “To begin, “X” is an area in psychology that could assist with my academics.” => explain “X” => give examples of “X” (if applicable) => prove thesis (using “X”) “Thus, an area of psychology that could help with my academics is X.” “Second, “Y” is an area in psychology that could assist with my academics.” => explain “Y” => give examples of “Y” (if applicable) => prove thesis (using “Y”) “Therefore, an area of psychology that could help with my academics is Y.” “Finally, “Z” is an area in psychology that could assist with my academics.” => explain “Z” => give examples of “Z” (if applicable) => prove thesis (using “Z”) “Therefore, an area of psychology that could help with my academics is Z.” 3 Assignment FAQs Q1) Can I write this essay in first person? Yes, but I would recommend caution when using first person as, from experience marking essays in first person, the writing seems to diminish in quality. It feels like the writing style is more casual conversion, then the formal writing style expected by the college. If you write in first person, I would highly recommend finishing the essay, taking 1-2 days off, and then re-read the essay, focusing on any writing that could be considering less formal and upgrading the language. Q2) With respect to the three concepts from the course, can I use three memory techniques? No: the three concepts (or body paragraphs) must be different topics from the course. If students wish to use memory strategies as a concept/body paragraph, they can use as many memory techniques presented in the course within that body paragraph. If you are unsure about your thesis statement, feel free to email instructor for confirmation. Q3) What can I use for an “area of life”? Students have used general life, relationships, academic life, as well as employment. Students have also used psychological concepts to train cats or dogs and even improve their golf game. One student taught horseback riding and used three concepts from the course that could improve her teaching. Q4) With respect to the “area of my life”, can I use more than one? Yes, but having more than one area may require additional work/depth, depending on how you word it. Here are some examples: E1). “Three areas in the field of psychology that could improve academics include X, Y and Z”. - With this thesis statement, students only have to relate the concepts to academics. E2). “Three areas in the field of psychology that could improve academics and employment include X, Y and Z”. - With this thesis statement, students would have to relate all concepts (X/Y/Z or the body paragraphs) to both academics and employment. - This would mean increasing the depth/length level to ensure both areas (academics and employment) are explained in enough detail. E3). "Concepts in psychology could improve many aspects of life including X for parenting, Y for academics, and Z for employment." - This thesis statement would allow students to link the concepts (X, Y, and Z) to a specific area of life per body paragraph. - This thesis statement would not change the length/depth requirements as there is a single link (parenting, academic, employment) per body paragraph. 4 Student F.A.Q.s on Essays 1 – How long does my essay have to be? All essays must be five pages, double spaced, of content and the five pages do not include the title page or reference page(s). I would recommend one page for the introduction, one page for each body paragraph (x3), and one page for the conclusion. Please note, so long as the fifth and final page gets past the half way point, I will give full marks. Do not worry about having to get to five pages, margin to margin. Finally, students can go over the five pages of content but, if so, the only recommendation would be to keep the body paragraphs similar with respect to depth/length. 2 - Can I send you my essay to look over before handing in? Yes and no: to be fair to all students, instructor is willing to look at your thesis statement and one paragraph (introduction, conclusion, or one of the body paragraphs) of your choice. If you decide to not send the introduction, please include the thesis statement. Deadline for instructor feedback is the Thursday (by 12:00pm), before the due date, as I cannot guarantee email returns on weekends. WORD file is required, so I can edit within the document. 3 – Do I have to give in-text citations and references and, if so, in what format? Yes, you must give formal in-text citations, as well as references, and it must be in APA format. For assistance in APA formatting, please go to our “Learning Resources” shell (see next page for directions). 4 – How many direct quotes am I allowed to use? Students are allowed to use 3-6 sentences (approximately 60 words) of direct quotes, but the number of quotes is up to the student. For example, a student could use two sentences in each body paragraph, totaling six sentences, or one 60-word quote. Please do not worry about being a little over the approximate number of words – this rule is to ensure students do not lose marks in the depth row of the rubric (ie: not enough content in your own words) and to protect against plagiarism. If you are unsure, please email me the quote for confirmation. 5 – What if I accidentally hand in an essay with more than 60 words of direct quotes? So long as the quotes are referenced, it is not plagiarism, but marks will be docked in the “explanation” row of the rubric. 6 – What if Moodle is not allowing me to upload my assignment? I would recommend re-booting your computer and trying again. Afterwards, if you cannot upload the essay to the required dropbox, email it to the instructor before the due date. Afterwards, keep trying to upload as, for record keeping, the college would prefer the document to be uploaded to Moodle. 7 – If I hand in my essay in advance, will you mark it early? In case students want to make any changes, I don’t start marking until three days before the due date. 8 – What if I hand in the essay late? Late assignments are docked 25% per
