An Analysis of Litany at the Tomb of Frederick Douglass by Martin Espada
    Political subjects often grab the attention of the poets of mod
ern age. The compositions based on politics as well as social affairs related to it are addressed effectively. Martin Espada is one of the modern poets in this context that take political subjects as their primary source of poetry. In his famous work Litany at the Tomb of Frederick Douglas, he celebrates the rise of Obama, as the African American man as the most powerful man in the world. The core essence of the poem centers over the joy and wonder that the poet feels by putting his feet into the shoes of Douglas. The poem is remarkable in the sense that it offers historical references that are deliberately made to showcase how racial inequalities were structured around the social biases; the rise of someone belonging to the marginalized people is an example which eliminates the scales of social biases in the modern context.
