Why do the family and teacher think the child does the behavior?
Brainstorm several possibilities. Always rule out any medical problems first. Then observe the child. Observe for temperament, developmental level, delay, disability, coping style, sensory needs, imitation, anxiety, fear, anger, stress, hypersensitivity, sleep deprivation, grief, depression, need for positive attention, recent loss or transitions, trauma, or abuse. Think about how the child is keeping himself safe. Has he learned to avoid adults to protect himself or has he learned to “make himself heard” and use more intense ways of getting the attention of the adult in order to be protected?
