Why do children behave as they do?
Introduction
As soon as a child is born, his development takes on a new level. Children exhibit different behaviours at different points of time. Many theorists have attempted to classify the development of children and explain their behaviour. One such theorist was Jean Piaget. Jean Piaget developed a Cognitive developmental theory to explain children’s behaviour. This theory is based on the thought processes of children as they grow. The theory explained how children react and interact with the world around them (Schaffer, 2004).
Piaget’s Cognitive Developmental Theory
While all cognitive theories aim to explain the thought processes of individuals, Piaget’s Cognitive Developmental Theory revolutionized the understanding of children’s thought works (Barrouillet, 2015). It is one of the most influential theory amongst cognitive theories. Piaget stated that children think in a manner that is quite different than the way adults think. His theory tried to detail and explain the way in which children’s thought processes and mental states develop. It also explained how these thought processes interact with the world and interpret these interactions.
